Kari and the Monks
I met Kari (left) and the monks while filming a documentary about animal trafficking and was absolutely blown away by her mission in life and the monkeys she has rescued. Kari has dedicated her life to Jungle Friends Primate Sanctuary in Florida which provides permanent high-quality care and lots of love for monkeys who have been victims of laboratory research, retired overworked and enslaved sideshows, backyard zoos, abandoned pets, or who have been confiscated by authorities for any number of reasons...
The monkeys often arrive at Jungle Friends terrified and traumatized after a life in a lab cage, used for, more often than not, fruitless experiments that rise to the height of human cruelty. Each monkey has a distinct little personality of its own and usually eases into a communal life with its kindred but some are in need of expensive medical care that Kari provides, and they all eat like, well, wild animals, so Kari's bills are extremely expensive. She relies on kind-hearted people who volunteer and special people who commit to a small donation each month which helps her keep the sanctuary going. Kari lives in an old trailer in the midst of hundreds of monkeys and dedicates literally every waking hour to these little "people" so you can be sure that every penny is not spent on big "non-profit" paychecks, expense accounts, fancy cars and work-vacation retreats but on the monkeys themselves. The primary goal of Jungle Friends is to rehabilitate monkeys psychologically, tend to any medical problems, and socialize them with members of their own species. Through their unique primate housing system and socialization procedures, Jungle Friends has successfully integrated monkeys into groups of varying sizes who live in enriching spacious indoor/outdoor habitats.
